Laying a Patio Using Patio Pavers
Laying a patio looks more difficult than it really is, and could easily be a great long weekend project. It requires a strong back and some basic garden tools, but the result is a level and useful patio for years to come!
Tools & Materials
- Chisel
- Mallet
- Level
- Shovel
- Stakes & String
- Safety Glasses/Gloves
- Tamper (can be rented from your local hardware store)
- Broom
- Crushed Screening
- Sand
- Patio Slabs/Stone
Step 1
Mark the proposed area for excavation, either with spray paint or stakes. Excavate the entire area to an approximate depth of 4”-6”
Step 2
Fill excavated area with approximately 4” of screening
Step 3
Compact screening with a vibrating plate tamper. This will provide a firm base and allow water to drain from beneath the patio slabs or stones
Step 4
Complete your base by adding 1” of bedding sand, maintaining a 2”s lope approximately every 10 feet – away from your foundation wall or from your previously determined slope direction
Step 5:
Lay 1 to 2 rows of Patio Stones. Check the grade with a level every 2 rows to ensure proper drainage.
Step 6:
Continue laying Patio Stones in the desired pattern. Sweep sand into joints, and sweep off remaining sand!
