Overseeding your Lawn
Recent news suggests we may have more time at home again, and this information has us turning our thoughts to the oasis that is our own yard. If the summer months have left bare and patchy places on your lawn the time is nigh to correct this issue, ensuring a stronger, greener lawn next year.
One of the most practical solutions to lawn remediation is overseeding, and early October is the perfect time to do this. The reasons that Fall is the perfect time to overseed are plenty, firstly the soil is still warm, but the air is cooler. Also, there are fewer weeds for new grass to compete against and since trees are starting to drop leaves, there’s more available sunlight. Finally, summertime plagues and pests are less aggressive this time of year (boy, wouldn’t that be nice).
With our simple steps below, you will be rewarded in lawn-luxury next Spring.
- Mow lower than usual
Cut your grass a setting or two shorter than normal and bag the clippings. After mowing, rake the lawn to loosen the top layer of soil and remove any dead grass. Badly damaged grass will come right up and leave an ideal opening for new seed to root. - Choose the right seed
Which type of grass seed you choose depends on your existing grass type and your sunlight exposure. Ask a friendly Ridgeview representative for a recommendation on your seed type. - Correct the soil
It’s a good idea to rake in a thin layer of enriched soil or black loam over your lawn to help the seed settle in. A thin layer is best as you don’t want to suffocate the existing lawn, just less than a quarter of an inch is ideal. - Spread the joy
You’ve completed steps 1,2,3 like a boss, now comes the fun & easy part. Just fill up your spreader with your seed and start spreading the love - Feed & water
To give your new grass seedlings the essential nutrients they need for fast growth, use a product such as Scott’s Turf Builder starter, or to skip this step entirely consider a Scott’s Turfbuilder seed which already contains a fertilizer. No matter which type of seed you choose, be sure to keep the soil moist by lightly watering once or twice a day until the new grass has reached the same height as the rest of your lawn.
