Building an Evergreen Wreath
There are a lot of different wreath forms you can use as the base of your wreath. It really depends on the actual type of look you are going for. A styrofoam wreath form is well suited to plastic or silk flowers or wreaths where you are gluing the media to the base, for instance christmas ball or pine cone wreaths. But when using fresh evergreen boughs there are two key types of forms that will work best. Either a natural grape vine or a wire form both available in varying sizes, you can get a little creative or in grand scale. If your not up to starting from scratch you can also buy a fresh pre-made wreath and decorate it yourself. However for the purpose of this little tutorial let’s talk about making your very own evergreen wreath.
Get your materials ready:
- Green floral wire
- Gardening gloves
- Wire snips
- Garden shears
- Assorted evergreen boughs; juniper, boxwood, cedar (one of the best materials), spruce and white pine (another awesome filler)
- Decorations
Step 1
Cut the floral wire into about 20-60 4-6” lengths (will depend on the size of wreath – the larger the form the more lengths you will need)
Step 2
Cut 3 – 4 different types of evergreens into bunches with the largest section on the bottom and bind them together with the green floral wire.
Step 3
Attach the bunch to the wreath form, again with the wire.
Step 4
Creating another bunch this time laying it over top of the wire on the previous bunch.
Keep repeating this process all the way around your wreath. You will end up with a gorgeous full wreath ready for decorating! If using a grape vine wreath you may want to only cover one side with boughs leaving some of the vine exposed, it’s beautiful in it’s own right.
