Creating a Meditation Garden
Meditation has been proven to improve quality of life so it only makes sense to do so amidst the other life improving past time of gardening. In fact it is said that Meditation can
- Reduce stress
- Improve concentration
- Increase self-awareness
- Increase happiness
- Slows AGING!!
- Benefits cardiovascular and immune health.
Create a perfect meditation space in your landscape with these steps.
Decide on a location with minimal noise or interference, it’s hard to clear your mind surrounded by distractions. Alternatively drowning out unfavorable noise with a bubbling water feature or soft chime can help.
Contemplate what YOU find calming, is it lush shade? Perhaps a location under a tree, or among thick ferns or other leafy shade plants. Maybe there is already a space in your garden with these features that could be adapted to accommodate a seating area. Maybe you’re more impacted by dramatic colour or fragrance? Some plants have a naturally calming scent such as Lavender, Chamomile, Jasmine, Roses or Lilac all are well known to have tranquility inducing properties.
Decide where you will sit during your meditation and add appropriate furniture, a bench, an outdoor carpet or a simple mound of soft ground cover. We love the idea of building a mossy mound by creating a dirt hill and planting Scotch Moss or Chamomile as a ground cover. Bring a small comfy mat to keep your butt dry and voila! A perfect seating area “au naturel”
After all this is done you could add some simple statuary, this of course will not likely do much for the quality of your meditation but will certainly help you look the part! We recommend inspirational statues such as a seated buddha, or an infinity symbol statue.
