I don’t know about you but late summer vacations and a very demanding vegetable harvest has left me with a lawn joining the dark side. I’m referring to weeds. They are the bane of very existence and though I usually go the labour intensive route of pulling each and every one it may be past the point of no return. It goes without saying that left unchecked I can expect a weed filled frustration causing lawn come next spring. So what’s a gal to do? Well the good news is that Fall is actually one of the best times to apply a weed control product. Many over wintering weeds can be wiped out now ensuring a favourable spring lawn. Here’s my recommendation for what to do now!

Your going to want a pre & post emergent herbicide. That’s because some weeds are already growing and you’re also trying to stop others from starting next year. Though we’ve had a week of very warm temperatures the inevitable dip in the mercury is not far off. Herbicides are most effective when air temperature is 50° F and above.Weeds that can be treated this time of year include Crabgrass, Burweed, Annual Bluegrass, Plantain, Dandelion, Prickly Lettuce, Purslane, Henbit & Clover. (I swear I have every last one of these on my lawn right now!)

Decide if you are looking for a liquid or pellet form herbicide, both will spread and cover large areas. Pellet form products often include a fertilizer so if your lawn could use some additional support this may be the right product for you. Ensure to be careful of any concrete areas as some herbicide will stain and steer clear of garden beds so that you don’t end up damaging any surrounding plants.
